SEO

Search Engine Optimization. The practice of shaping a website's content, structure, and authority so it ranks well in traditional search results — Google, Bing, and the blue-link results pages that still drive the majority of the internet's traffic. SEO rests on three pillars: technical foundations, content aligned to search intent, and authority built through links and mentions. Done well, it compounds — a page published today can still be sending qualified traffic in three years.

"SEO is still the highest-leverage channel in digital marketing: it's the only one that keeps paying out after you stop actively working on it."

AEO

Answer Engine Optimization. The practice of structuring content so it can be lifted directly into a machine-generated answer — featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, voice assistant replies, and AI answer boxes. AEO grew out of the shift toward zero-click search: when the answer engine can extract a clean, self-contained answer from your page, it doesn't always need to send the user to your site at all. In practice this means writing in direct, extractable blocks — clear questions followed by concise answers, well-labeled steps, and structured data that removes ambiguity about what a page is actually saying.

"If a search engine has to guess what your answer is, it will usually just answer for you — using someone else's page."

GEO

Generative Engine Optimization. The practice of structuring content and digital presence so that generative AI platforms — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity — cite, recommend, or mention a brand when users ask a related question. Unlike traditional SEO, the "result" isn't a ranked link; it's a sentence inside a synthesized answer, often with no click at all. Because these models draw heavily on third-party sources — reviews, forums, comparison sites, documentation — being cited well depends on being clearly and consistently described across the wider web, not just on-site. SEO, AEO, and GEO overlap heavily in practice: clear structure, genuine expertise, and credible external mentions serve all three at once.

"The brand doesn't need to win every click anymore — it needs to be the answer the model reaches for."
